So, what is Blepharoplasty?
In short, Blepharoplasty is a condition where one, or both eyelids can fall or drop to varying degrees. For some this is congenital, most commonly myogenic dysgensis, leading to malformation of the levator muscles that control the eyelid.
Trauma, causing damage to the tissue around the eyes; and previous eye surgery, such as corrective or cataract treatment, can also be contributory factors. Neurological disorders that cause muscle weakness can also exacerbate the condition, as can under-lying systemic diseases such as diabetes, shingles, a stroke, or tumour.
However, in many cases the root cause of Blepharoplasty is quite simply age. As we get older the tissue around the eyes becomes stretched and weakened (known as involutional ptosis). In addition, weight gain can lead to fatty tissue gathering around the eyelid, making it almost impossible to prevent the eyelid from drooping.
How is the Upper Blepharoplasty Procedure Performed?
Upper Blepharoplasty is, as the name suggests, the condition affecting the upper eyelids. To correct this condition, Dr. Taban shortens and reattaches the levator muscles, creating a more comfortable and functional position. He assesses each individual patient prior to surgery, determining which of the oculoplastic techniques is best suited. A levator resection is highly effective to combat ptosis caused by stretched muscles, whilst a frontalis sling is usually recommended for congenital conditions.
Will it hurt? How long will it take to recover? These are two natural questions to ask. You may be surprised to know that local anesthesia is all that is required to numb the eyelid. In fact, patients will be able to respond to the surgeon’s instructions to open and close the eye, helping to aid alignment. A minimal incision is then all that is required.
Your eyelid may remain swollen and a little sore for one to two weeks after the procedure, but it is highly unusual for anything more than mild pain, and that is unlikely to last beyond the first 24-hours.
The final results can become visible anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, determined by the individual’s natural healing process.
Who Should Perform an Upper Blepharoplasty?
It’s essential that ONLY a surgeon who specializes in ptosis be allowed to perform any Blepharoplasty procedure. This is highly skilled surgery, requiring an in-depth knowledge of both the anatomy and structure of the eyelids. So, let’s sum up. Here are just 5 reasons why you should consider undergoing an Upper Blepharoplasty procedure:
Youthful Appearance
Age eventually takes its toll on the eye area, with excess skin forming on the upper eyelid. The result is that we can often look much older than our years. Upper Blepharoplasty can effectively turn back the clock, making those droopy eyelids a thing of the past, and in chronic cases reducing the risk of further complications.
Safety and Speed of Procedure
Many patients are naturally apprehensive about undergoing any form of surgical procedure, particularly around the eye area. However, an Upper Blepharoplasty (in the hands of a suitably qualified surgeon) is both a safe and relatively quick process. The minimally invasive nature of the surgery can actually result in some patients not requiring any form of pain relief.
Physical and Mental Benefits
Not only will Upper Blepharoplasty change your face’s appearance for the better, but it can also have a profound effect on self-confidence. Sufferers can often become introverted and extremely self-conscious. In chronic cases it can even lead to headaches and general discomfort as then head is titled back and brow raised in order to compensate. Imagine the boost to self-esteem to be able to consign any deformity or disfiguration to the history books.
Natural Looking Results That Last
One of the great benefits of eyelid surgery is that the results are a natural appearance with discreet scarring that can disappear within weeks. Eyes appear bright, rejuvenated, and this is also a relatively long-term solution.
Relatively Inexpensive Procedure
It’s natural to assume a procedure that can take years off your appearance would come with a hefty price tag. That’s not the case. You will be pleasantly surprised that a procedure that can have such a profound effect on a patient’s appearance is actually so reasonably priced.
