Muller Muscle Resection

If drooping eyelids make you look tired or older than you actually are, you may be experiencing a condition called eyelid ptosis, which typically occurs as a result of stretched or loose muscles that control the eyelids. While the appearance of droopy eyes may be frustrating, it can be even more uncomfortable if your eyelids interfere with your field of vision. Fortunately, there is a surgical procedure available to correct the appearance and function of your eyelids called ptosis surgery and Muller muscle resection.

To learn more about whether you are good candidate for ptosis surgery in Los Angeles, schedule an appointment at Taban MD today! Dr. Taban is highly experienced at performing ptosis surgeries and has a strong track record of successful results.

What is the Muller Muscle?

The Muller muscle is also known as the superior tarsal muscle, which is innervated by the sympathetic nervous system, and works to help lift the upper eyelid. In some cases, some individuals are simply born with a condition that causes these muscles to fail to contract and maintain proper lid position, which is what creates a droopy appearance. For other patients, the condition may occur as a result of age or weakened muscles.

Muller Muscle Resection

In order to correct droopy eyelids, an oculoplastic surgeon can perform a fairly simple procedure in which the Muller muscle is resectioned, and reattached to shorten and tighten the muscle, thereby creating a satisfactory lid height. The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia in order for the patient to respond to the surgeon by lifting and lowering their eyelids.

Following a Muller muscle resection, patients may experience blurry vision as well as swelling, redness, and discomfort while the body heals. These side effects typically resolve after a series of weeks.
