Cheek Lift vs. Face Lift

Aging is a natural process that often leads to changes in the appearance of one’s face. For those looking into correcting any signs of aging on their face, there are multiple options patients can choose from. Most often, patients either have a midface lift (also referred to as a “cheek lift”) or a full-facelift. There are benefits to both depending on what you are specifically looking for.

Facelift

A facelift is a procedure that helps create a younger, more youthful appearance in your face. Aging can cause sagging and change the shape of your face. A facelift can reduce the sagging on your cheeks and jawline. The procedure involves pulling back the flaps of skin on each side of your face. After this, Dr. Taban alters tissue under the skin to restore a youthful contour to your face. After the tissue below the skin has been addressed, the excess skin is removed and the flap is closed with sutures.

A facelift will not decrease lines, wrinkles, or sun damage from your skin. The facelift does not address issues regarding the quality of your skin. The facelift procedure focuses more on removing excess skin. However, there are additional procedures that can address skin quality.

There are multiple reasons why someone would opt for a facelift. Age-related changes in the face are most common, including appearance and shape. As you age, skin becomes less elastic and looser. A facelift addresses the following age-related issues:

  • Sagging cheeks
  • Excess skin at the lower jawline
  • Deepening of the skin fold from the side of your nose to the corner of your mouth

Midface Lift (Cheek Lift)

A midface lift or cheek lift is different from a full-facelift as it focuses restoration of the mid-face and cheek areas. Round facial contours and fullness in the mid-cheek area are the markers of youth and beauty which is why a mid-face lift is beneficial. The midface lift restores the three-dimensional fullness to the mid-face area, restoring a youthful look in one’s face. This procedure is more focused on the mid-face because that’s one of the most noticeable places where signs of aging appear, in addition to the fact that the face-lift doesn’t fully address and restore this area of the face.

There are several techniques a midface or cheek lift uses, including:

  • Trans-eyelid (inside the lower eyelid)
  • Endoscopic (through the temples behind the hairline)
  • Through the inside of one’s mouth.

The technique depends on what is best for the specific patient (facial structure, previous surgeries, and aesthetic goals). Cheek augmentation with implants can restore the fullness of the cheek and mid-face area. The implants are inserted through hidden incisions and generally feel as if they are a part of your own face and cheekbone after healing. While a facelift removes sagging skin, the midface lift includes more restoration to the areas that are the most prone to aging.
