Picture a balloon you have just blown up. It is full, round, and resilient. A day or two later, that balloon has deflated a bit. It now sags with wrinkles and folds. Your face goes through the same process of deflation as it ages. A younger person’s face has enough fat to make it smooth and resilient. An older face, you may notice, is more saggy, wrinkled, and fallen. Looking younger means restoring volume to your face. Dr. Taban does this with a fat transfer under the eyes.
Dr. Taban is an oculoplastic surgeon in the Greater Los Angeles area. He practices in Beverly Hills and Santa Barbara. Dr. Taban helps patients improve the look of their eyelids, orbits, and faces.
Fat Not Fillers
Today, there are many synthetic fillers used to restore fullness to the face. Botox, Xeomin, and Dysport are a few well-known fillers. To maintain your look, Dr. Taban must inject fillers every three to six months. This can strain your wallet. Fillers can also cause allergic reactions. The solution to all these problems is to replace fillers with fat from your own body.
Facial lipotransfer, or fat transfer under the eyes, is a natural way to restore volume to the face. Unlike fillers, lipotransfer is a permanent solution. Dr. Taban harvests the fat from your own body’s reserves. This eliminates the chance of an allergic reaction. Patients always have pockets of fat on their bodies and it is easy to harvest. Fat transfer restores volume to your face in a natural, efficient, and permanent way.

The Procedure
Fat transfer is a cosmetic procedure performed under local anesthesia. This means only the treatment area (face, ) and not the rest of your body, will be without sensation. Patients can also choose to undergo sedation, which may help calm your nerves.
Dr. Taban harvests fat cells from another part of the body using small incisions. Body parts that may have excess fat are the abdomen, flanks (love handles, ) and thighs. The fat gets filtered, then injected into the face where it can help the most. The harvested fat cells may be injected into the brows, temples, around eyes, cheeks, lips, and nasolabial folds.

Recovery Period
Fat transfer is a minimally invasive procedure with little downtime after surgery. An initial phase of bruising and swelling disappear in 7-10 days. You can expect 60-70 percent of the transferred fat cells to survive after the first two to three months. Dr. Taban injects more fat than necessary to account for this loss.
A touch-up may be necessary after you have gone through the healing process. For a touch-up, Dr. Taban either harvests more fat from the body or uses facial fillers to complement the fat transfer.
Dr. Taban is a highly skilled plastic and cosmetic surgeon. Lumps and bumps following fat transfer are rare using his proper technique.
